The school aims to make maths exciting and enjoyable through high quality, engaging and interactive teaching based on the White Rose scheme. This mastery approach provides deep understanding through concrete, pictorial and abstract methods. Recall of multiplication facts is seen as essential.
In EYFS, strong grounding in number and early concepts aims to set foundations. Children develop understanding of numbers to 10, counting, comparing quantities, spotting patterns and using mathematical language.
In KS1, the curriculum aims for fluency, reasoning and problem solving. Outcomes include competence and enjoyment of maths, logical thinking and communication. Teaching is interactive using White Rose scheme, with working walls displaying concrete, pictorial and abstract methods. Self-assessment is encouraged.
In KS2, the aims continue around fluency, reasoning and problem solving to build deep and secure learning. White Rose plans support mastery teaching with flexibility. Methods continue focus on concrete, pictorial, abstract. Self-assessment against success criteria is used.
Impact is measured through observations, book looks, learning walks, staff and pupil voice, and Ongoing formative and summative assessments. The approach intends mathematics competence and enjoyment for real world application.
Considerable importance is attached to the children understanding mathematical processes, concepts and skills. Above all it can be a powerful means of communication. Enthusiasm for maths is encouraged by presenting it in an interesting and enjoyable way, allowing the children to actively participate in the learning process, thus creating a sense of achievement and confidence. There is a strong emphasis on the development of mental arithmetic and problem solving.
